Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5831 and #5826. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service, and retired in September of 1962. #5831 was constructed in January of 1948, while #5826 was built in September of 1948. They're waiting for their next helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible in the background (L to R) are part of the 7th Street Bridge, a conical sanding tower, a concrete coaling station, as well as portions of the PRR's Passenger Car Shops. |

Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9493 and two more "FF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All are FF-16's built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9493 was built in October of 1950 and retired in April of 1965. Partially visible on the right is PRR engine #5826, a BH-50 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in September of 1948, originally rated as a 3,000 horsepower BP-60 for passenger service, later rebuilt into a 2,500 horsepower BH-50 for freight/helper/pusher service, and retired in Septemberl of 1962. All of these locomotives await their next helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible in the background are portions of the 7th Street Bridge and the PRR's Passenger Car Shops. |

SFM. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) of a photo by Marvin H. Cohen that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps in 1952. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6755, #5826, and an unidentified Class I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" steam locomotive. #6755 is an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata as an M-1A during June of 1930, rebuilt as an M-1B in April of 1944, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #5826 is a BH-50 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a 3,000 HP BP-60 for passenger service in September of 1948, later reclassified as a 2,500 HP BH-50 for helper service, and retired in September of 1962. AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 November 1956. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5826 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, and later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5826 was constructed in September of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're rounding the Curve on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona where they'll await another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." ("PrrFan18n") |
