Title:
Description:  By the late 1950s, there were just two places in the United States that still featured big-time steam operations: The Norfolk & Western in the Appalachias, and Union Pacific in Wyoming. Cheyenne was the home base for UPs fleet of 4-8-8-4 "Big Boys" and 4-6-6-4 "Challengers," with an enormous coaling tower to feed these massive beasts. An unidentified "Challenger" sits just outside of the coaling tower in October 1958, and much of the rest of the steam locomotive facility can be seen as well - including an Alco diesel switcher! Title:  CBQ 125A
Description:  An A-B-B-A set of F3 diesels gets road grime washed off in Galesburg, Illinois, on a sunny October 1959 day. F3A 125-A must have been the trailing unit of the set, as the engines coupler cover is still open (and lead unit 117-A had its coupler cover closed). Burlingtons freight F-units wore this simple, yet attractive, light gray scheme, while the passenger Fs were painted silver. (Frank "Woody" Woodburn photo, Craig Walker collection)

GT&C 40
Title:  GT&C 40
Description:  Southern Californias Orange County features two narrow gauge railroads in daily service - One at Disneyland and the other at Knotts Berry Farm. The railroad at Knotts, the Ghost Town & Calico, was opened for service in November 1951 to entertain customers waiting in line for Mrs. Knotts famed Chicken Dinner Restaurant. Walter Knott purchased the equipment from both the Rio Grande Southern, which was in the process of shutting down, and the Denver & Rio Grande Western. A pair of C-19 class 2-8-0 Consolidations, former-RGS 41 and ex-D&RGW 340, were given cosmetic backdating (faux oil burning headlamps and balloon stacks, for example) and painted in bright colors to replicate an "Old West" appearance. Both engines were built in 1881. A variety of passenger cars, freight cars, a short caboose, a Pacific Electric depot and even Rio Grande Southern "Galloping Goose" #3 were part of the collection (along with a handful of former RGS employees to maintain the equipment). Engine #40 "Red Cliff" (the former D&RGW 340) is seen here smoking it up as it pulls its train between a row of eucalyptus trees and some of the extra cars (the short D&RGW caboose, a D&RGW high-side gondola and former RGS business car "San Juan") on a bright January 1961 day. The equipment on this railroad has now been restored to a more historical representation. (Exact date unknown.)

ATSF 912
Title:  ATSF 912
Description:  The roundhouse and turntable combination was railroadings unique solution to servicing steam locomotives in a relatively small area. Even a large roundhouse, such as this example at Santa Fe Railways San Bernardino, California, yard was an efficient use of space. By the time of this photo in April 1961, steam was gone and was replaced with diesels. But the roundhouse and turntable was still in service. (Exact date unknown.)

SF&D 3
Title:  SF&D 3
Description:  A Santa Fe & Disneyland passenger train makes a stop at the Main Street station. SF&D 2-4-4T Forney #3 was built by Baldwin in April 1895. The 36"-gauge engine was rebuilt from Godchaux Sugar Company (Louisiana) 0-4-4T #1, and was placed in service at Disneyland on March 28, 1958 (2 years, 8 months and 11 days after the park opened). SF&D #3 is named "Fred Gurley," the president of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway from 1944 to 1957, who approved Santa Fes participation as a sponsor at the theme park. (Trivia: Other trains that wore the Santa Fe & Disneyland markings included the Viewliners [modeled after EMDs Aerotrain] and their replacement, the Monorails. Santa Fes sponsorship of these rides lasted from 1955 until 1974 - Three years after the formation of Amtrak!) (Exact date unknown.)

Title:  ATSF 1
Description:  Santa Fe 2-8-0 #1, the “Cyrus K. Holliday,” was originally Santa Fe 2-8-0 #132, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in September 1880. It became #1 (and named for Santa Fe’s first president and a founder of Topeka, KS, Cyrus K. Holliday) in the early 1960s for use as on operating display celebrating the Kansas State Centennial at the Kansas Free Fair in Topeka between June 15th and 25th, 1961. (Frank "Woody" Woodburn photo)

SBD 8050
Title:  SBD 8050
Description:  Seaboard System was a US Class I railroad that was created after the consolidation of the Family Lines System railroads (Louisville & Nashville, Seaboard Coast Line, Gerogia Railroad, Clinchfield Railroad and the West Point Route) on December 29, 1982. was a short-lived former US Class I railroad that was created after the consolidation of the Family Lines System railroads (notably the Louisville & Nashville and Seaboard Coast Line) on December 29, 1982. Under the Family Lines era, the railroads shared common ownership but used different names when conducting business. On July 1, 1986, the Seaboard System renamed itself as the CSX Transportation and absorbed the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad on August 31, 1987 which ended the CSX Corporations shared ownership of the Seaboard System and Chessie System railroads (Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio and Western Maryland). This short-lived railroad painted quite a few engines into a simple but attractive scheme, as worn by SD40-2 8050 (the former SCL 8050) sunning itself in Richmond, Virginia, on September 3rd, 1984.
