DTI 4-4-0 #5 - Detroit, Toledo & Ironton |
Description: |
Here is a fairly old print of a Detroit, Toledo & Ironton 4-4-0 American-type steam locomotive for the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton. According to the information on the back of the photo, it was built by Rogers in 1887 and originally it carried the number 385 but I could not confirm or deny this information from any source online but I did find this picture of #5 and its sister locomotive #11 at www.waverlyinfo.net. Chuck Zeiler came to the rescue with additional info on this loco according to the Rogers Locomotive Works data. It was built in November 21, 1887 as Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan #11. Specs - serial #3850, 135 psii boiler pressure, 16x24" cylinders, modest tractive effort of 12,436 lb. The loco was rebuilt in August of 1903 to 17x24" cylinders. In 1896, it became Ann Arbor #11 and then resold in April of 1909 to Detroit, Toldeo & Ironton as their #5 seen here. Sometime around 1915, the loco was wrecked and scrapped. Thanks, Chuck, for the excellent details! No photographer was listed for the photo. |

DTI 4-4-0 #16 - Detroit, Toledo & Ironton |
Description: |
Interesting side story for this little 4-4-0 American-style steam locomotive - built for the Midland Pennsylvania 1914 (only one ordered), this Eight-wheeler was repossessed by Baldwin and sold to the DT & I. That railroad used #16 on its Toledo-Detroit Railroad subsidiary hence several sources list it as a Toledo-Detroit locomotive only. In 1928 the DT & I donated #16 to Henry Ford's Edison Institute in Dearborn, where it remained on display for decades. In 1980, the Ford Museum traded #16 to the Illinois Railway Museum where it resides today. Photo from the Harold K. Vollrath collection. |
