Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin (and a handful in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) in the fall of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

MWCX 462747
Title:  MWCX 462747
Description:  MWCX 462747 (former CNW 753735, former ROCK 801224), was 1 of a string of cars spotted on a passing siding along the CN, former C&NW, rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center (industrial park is too plebeian for oft ostentatious Neenah) is visible in the background, including Innovative Machining, LLC, 550 Commerce Ct. The former SOO main line runs parallel, just out-of-frame at the bottom of the photograph.

CN 3037, CREX 1519, et al.
Title:  CN 3037, CREX 1519, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. At left, a very enthusiastic, young railfan (with his parent or guardian) records the train with his cellular telephone. Just out-of-frame to the left, a unit train of bi-level autoracks waits to head northwest. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Train had three locomotives, CN 3037 and CREX 1519 pulling and CN 2934 mid-train.

Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '18. CN 3834 and BNSF 7094
Title:  CN 3834 and BNSF 7094
Description:  A CN through freight passes the depot/yard office (to left) and crosses W. 2nd St. while headed northeast past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

GTW 5857
Title:  GTW 5857
Description:  A CN local slowly approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Local, on its way back from New London, was slowing to prepare to switch Wisconsin Building Supply, 222 N. Lilas Dr., out-of-frame to left. The east end of the Marketplace Shopping Center, 2700 W. College Ave., can be seen at left. This portion is currently vacant, since WG&R Furniture moved to their new facility at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Ave. and Hwy. 41. N. Lynndale Dr. forms part of the ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton (to left) and the Town of Grand Chute (to right).

GTW 5857
Title:  GTW 5857
Description:  A CN local crosses W. College Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Local was returning from New London. The old Kmart store, 2400 W. College Ave., stood on the north side of College Ave. until it was demolished in '09. It dated to at least '67; it closed in '00. Due to the ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton and the Town of Grand Chute, the train was, for the most part, in the former while I was standing in the latter.

CN 8837, et al.
Title:  CN 8837, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight crosses N. Lake St., crosses the mouth of the Neenah Slough, and approaches the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 16 Dec. '18. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are at right. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train had two locomotives, CN 8837 and CN 2178. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.

CNW 520056
Title:  CNW 520056
Description:  CNW 520056 was one of a cut of cars being extracted from the former SOO yard by a CN through freight at Neenah, WI on 19 Dec. '18. I enjoy espying former C&NW equipment on, or in this case very near, former C&NW rails. A remnant of the former C&NW main line is still in use about 100' beyond (east of) this boxcar. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) can be seen at right. It was erected to eliminate the grade crossing (right about where this boxcar is) and opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.
