All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8665 was constructed in February of 1958, #8662 in January of 1958, and #8655 in December of 1957. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Description:  4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8655, #8676, and #8661. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8655 was built in 1957, but #8676 and #8661 were built in 1958. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train pulled by PRR engines #9607 and #9614-B, but will uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another run up the Allegheny Mountains. Visible on the left are numerous passenger cars marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge. Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during September of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8663, #8675, #8655, and #8676. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1957-1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."

They're departing the Altoona Passenger Station with a 17-car passenger train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains ~ via the Horseshoe Curve ~ to Pittsburgh and points West. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engine #8655 and another unit whose number was not recorded. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8655 was built in 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They are pushing a westbound TrucTrain up the Allegheny Mountains, but will uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. The slope of the Horseshoe Curve's upper end is also visible in the distance.
