Lightning stripe in the snow.
Title:  Lightning stripe in the snow.
Description:  One of D 22s other assignments was to run the Owego & Harford interchange to Owego twice a week, part of the trackage rights that D&H received as a condition of Conrails start up. A variety of power ran these trains over the years, including a wide variety of Alcos. By 2003 the Alcos were gone, but you could still find interesting power on the train. Here we see it head west from the new bridge connecting NY 17C to NY 17 across the river at Apalachin.

Framed in the chain link
Title:  Framed in the chain link
Description:  D 22 crosses over from track 1 to 2 to the Buffalo Runner as it heads up to Bevier St behind a pair of lightning stripe GP 38s from the M-K rebuild a dozen years earlier. The City of Binghamton had done some rehab work on the overpass a few years earlier and put up a chain link fence, which limited the ability to take photos, from it. The mesh was tight enough that this was the result.

Matched set
Title:  Matched set
Description:  This was the Holy Grail of Mills Job power-a pair of D&H painted GP 38s. It happened fairly often, you just had to be there to see it, though a lot of the time there would be a red unit in the set. I caught SU 2 at Miller Beach Rd, about two miles from their target downtown, with two lightning stripes and a dozen or so cars.

Title:  D 22 lite power
Description:  D 22 was the former SU 2 that worked the local freight in the Binghamton area. Two days a week it went to Owego to interchange with the Owego & Harford, primarily salt and LP gas. Sometimes it made the trip lite power one direction. So it is this day, with a pair of the D&H GP 38-2s

D22 with mixed power
Title:  D22 with mixed power
Description:  Power of D22 was most often a pair of GP38s in the 7300 series, former LV units, though occasionally a rebuilt GP 9 would get in. In the early years of CPs rule, RX 18s were common, as were RS 36s from the D&H itself. Heres D&H 7304 and one of the STLH painted GP9s seen from the new bridge at Campville.

Morning Mills
Title:  Morning Mills
Description:  Sometimes D 22 would head to Owego early in the day, before noon, which made it backlit for most of the trip. I caught it off the Apalachin-Campville connector, the sun at its back, reflecting off the salt hoppers as it went west with a half dozen cars behind a pair of lightning stripes.

Description:  Until CP relinquished rights to interchange with the Owego & Harford, local D22 ran there twice every week to interchange gas cars, among other things.
