A CN local crosses Main St. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2718 and CN 5335. The interesting, old, brick building at left was the Hiawatha Fur Farm's (Hiawatha Silver Fox Farm's) pelting station or fur house. It was likely built in 1931, because the company's earlier facility was destroyed by fire in Feb. of that year. The facility pelted furs for at least seven farms owned by or associated with the Nieman family in Wis. and Upper Mich. (in the 1940s at least). The pelts were shipped by rail to fur auctions in New York. |
