Ah, the R 40. I rode the F train to high school in the mid 70's, and saw them every day. They were assigned to the E and F trains exclusively then. Back in the bad old days, when working AC was a some time thing, it was great to ride out between cars on the cab end, due to the large open area. There was quite a breeze!! After the R 10's started to go into retirement on the A, some were reassigned there. I never quite got used to seeing them anywhere but the Queens line.
