PRR 5817, BH-50, c. 1956
Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Martin Zak that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1956. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5817 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5817 was constructed in December of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. Photo taken from the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata.
