ATSF 3520, on unstable track
PURCELL OK August 1977 -- Santa Fe GP30 3220 sits on a particularly soft section of track as it leans to the engineers side. The photo is straightened using the bridge and the cloud bases. The train is awaiting a crew to continue the journey south to Houston with loaded covered hoppers. EMD built the 3220 as ATSF 1220 (s/n 27207) in May 1962 and delivered it in blue with yellow ends. It became 3220 in the 1969-70 general renumbering, was repainted to yellow warbonnet sometime after this picture was taken, rebuilt to a GP30u and renumbered 2702 in November 1983, painted proposed merger colors SPSF red and yellow but reprinted to yellow warbonned before Jan 1 1991. On March 6 1998 it was patched BNSF and renumbered 2420 and was still in yellow warbonnet in mid 2012 while on the dead line in Temple TX. Bernie Feltman General Hard for folks to understand how much jointed rails, especially old yard tracks, could pitch and roll the trains that used them. Very nice, Charles 7/21/2012 9:59:27 AM
