CB&Q 0-8-0 Class F-1 548 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-8-0 Class F-1 548, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 548 was assigned to the Beardstown Division in February 1952, the print is marked Date C. 1953. This locomotive was built by the Brooks Works of Alco to USRA design in 1919 (c/n 61241) and sold for scrap in February 1954. Again I will point out the the location of the Fire Hose box, below the firebox, is not a good choice of locations. |

EJE 0-8-0 #579 - Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Rwy |
Description: |
This beefy 0-8-0 yard switcher started life out as Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern Rwy 2-8-0 #579 (serial #44414). Records show that this was scrapped in September of 1948, the same date as this photo so this may be the last time it was seen before the scrapper's torch. No photographer was listed. built by Alco-Pittsburgh in August of 1907. After the CLS&E was merged into the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern that same year, this loco fell on the EJE roster. In April of 1931, it was converted to the 0-8-0 you see here. |

BO 0-8-0 #614 |
Description: |
The photographer of this badly deteriorating photo identifies this as a 1928 Baldwin built 0-8-0 switcher. However, Chuck Zeiler offered an accurate history of this loco. Built by Alco-Richmond in January of 1906, this loco started as B&O 2-8-0 #2673. Original specs - - class E-27, 62" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 22x30" cylinders, engine weight of 208,500, tractive effort of 40,800 lb. In 1925, the loco was rebuilt at Mt Clare Shops into an 0-8-0 yard switcher. New specs - renumbered #614, reclassified as L-2, 62" drivers, 207 psi boiler pressure, 25 1/2x30" cylinders, engine weight of 221,000 lb, tractive effort of 55,360 lb. The loco was scrapped in September of 1954. No location or date was given for the photo. Thanks Chuck for your help with this one. It is very much appreciated! |

Built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1922, the switcher served well for nearly 31 years before being retired and scrapped in November of 1953. No locaiton, date or photographer was listed for the photo so approximates were used. |

This 0-8-0 is preserved at the museum at Carona. This area once had numerous lines to handle the coal (this is about 5 miles from Big Brutus, the worlds largest power shovel), lead, and zinc that was mined in the area. Now there's little left, just the BNSF's ex Frisco lines, and the South Kansas & Oklahoma, a WATCO line that is ex MP. |

PM 0-8-0 #1303 - Pere Marquette |
Description: |
This page needed some serious revision from when it was first posted due to new information and errors in this first listing. Good looking 0-8-0 switcher built by Alco-Pittsburgh in March of 1918 for the Pere Marquette as their PM #488. It was renumbered #1303 around 1920. The small sign above the first drivers notes that it must have served the B&O Chicago Terminal when this photo was taken by R.H. Kennedy. The loco slid onto the C&O roster when the PM was finally absorbed into the C&O in 1947. It was again renumbered C&O #43. Unfortunately, the switcher met up with the scrapper's torch in October of 1951. Specs - 51" drivers (later upgraded to 52", 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 206,000 lb, tractive effort of 45,200 lb. |

Description: |
Originally built in 1903 by Alco-Richmond as a 2-8-0 #2292, the B&O shops later rebuilt it as an 0-8-0 switcher. Max Miller photo labeled as Chicago, IL location but another photo of #1500 with similiar background building was labeled Garrett, IN. Not sure which is correct. Anyone recognize the building? |
