CN 4-4-0 #331 - Canadian National
Title:  CN 4-4-0 #331 - Canadian National
Description:  Cute example of a Montreal Locomotive Works 4-4-0 built for the Grand Trunk Pacific (GTP) of Canadia and delivered to them in April of 1908 as their #57. When the GTP was nationalized in 1920, the new Canadian National renumbered it to #331 as seen here. The plucky locomotive served until being scrapped in August of 1938. The date is an approximation. Photo is from the Colin Menzies III collection.

RDG 4-4-0C #406 - Reading Co
Title:  RDG 4-4-0C #406 - Reading Co
Description:  Beautiful original photo of Reading Shops built 4-4-0 C "American type" camelback delivered in 1911 as a member of the D-8c class. In 1920, several of the class were superheated, redesigned with Walschaert radial valve gears and reclassified as D-8sd. This locomotive made it to June of 1945 before being retired and scrapped. No photographer or date given but since the Walschaert vale gears are present, the photo was taken after 1920. I left the photo in its sepia coloring as it is fitting for this locomotive to be seen as a beautiful "golden oldie"

LSMS 4-4-0 #529 - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Title:  LSMS 4-4-0 #529 - Lake Shore & Michigan Southern
Description:  The photo is dated 9/10/1888 but entered here as 1900 since the site does not accept earlier dates. This photo, reprinted by W. R. Hicks possibly sometime in the 1940-50's, lists the builder as Grant Locomotive Works in 1881. The locomotive had 63" drivers, 17"x24" cylinders and generated 135 lbs psi boiler pressure. This information has not been confirmed. Interesting to note the engineer is posing for the photo and note also the huge dome just in front of the cab. Many 4-4-0's with this dome were rebuilt later with the boiler dome over the front drive axle.

CRIP 4-4-0 #609 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Title:  CRIP 4-4-0 #609 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:  Built by the Rock Island shops in 1890, this cute 8 wheeler was a B-16 class locomotive with 68" drivers. It could develop a modest 160 psi boiler pressure for its 18"x24" cylinders. The engine weight was 107,300 lb and it could apply a modest tractive effort of 15,552 lbs but enough to move traffic at the turn of the century. Note the crew member standing by the front coupling - must be setting it for the next linkup . . . or cleaning dead cows from the "cow catcher"! Month and day in 1933 is approximate - unknown photographer.
