PRR 5824, BH-50, c. 1955 |
Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1955. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5824 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5824 was built in May of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they've just passed under the 12th Street Footbridge and are returning to East Altoona after serving as "pushers" on a freight train headed up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they were uncoupled to head back down "The Mountain" for yet another helper/pusher run. |
