C&S AT&SF SW7 154
Title:  C&S AT&SF SW7 154
Description:  C&S AT&SF SW7 154 at Denver, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The short story; I shot this photo out the dutch door of an eastbound Denver Zephyr, a practice that soon came under the scrutiny of the crew and got me banished to my Slumbercoach room until the next crew change.

Note that the unit is painted in the CB&Q switcher paint scheme, lettered for the C&S and AT&SF. The C&S and AT&SF had an arrangement where each road supplied a few locomotives to a pool, and one crew (and locomotive) would handle the switching chores for both roads at Denver and at least as far as Coloroado Springs. Locomotives lettered C&S AT&SF (top to bottom, or, left to right) were owned by the C&S and manned by C&S crews. Locomotives lettered AT&SF C&S were AT&SF owned and manned.

FW&D 157
Title:  FW&D 157
Description:  Fort Worth & Denver Railway class NE13B 157 at Cicero, Illinois on June 8, 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 157 was built by Morrison International Car Company in 1967, was involved in a wreck and sent to a contract repair shop for rebuilding. It returned to service in December 1981, painted in the as-delivered colors, except for the herald and steps. As built, the herald was a Scothlite decal, no longer available in 1981, so the herald was hand-painted on the car. The yellow steps and appliances were a FW&D modification in the 1970's from the original black. The FW&D was formally merged into the BN on December 31, 1982, and had this repair taken place after that date, the car would likely have been painted Cascade Green.

In 1957 the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr was re-equipped, and the original two trainsets were sold to the C&S, becoming the Texas Zephyr. The last run of the Texas Zephyr was September 11, 1967, although the original Denver Zephyr trainsets were withdrawn from service in February 1965.

C&S 641
Title:  C&S 641
Description:  Colorado & Southern Observation 641, named SILVER STREAK, at Denver Colorado on August 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The SILVER STREAK began as CB&Q 231, ordered from Budd in December 1935, delivered in October 1936. This was part of an order for 20 stainless steel cars from Budd for the new Denver Zephyr (DZ). Four more cars were added later. In addition to the passenger cars, Budd constructed the power units (two A-units and two B-units) and delivered those to EMC for installation of the diesels and electrical gear. The DZ cars were semi-articulated and had special couplers that also had all the connections (air and electrical) needed for the new train, which was equipped with electric-pneumatic brakes. These cars lasted in DZ service until 1957, when the DZ was re-equipped and the original DZ's 24 cars were sold to subsidiary C&S for the Texas Zephyr. Rumor has it that some of these cars survive in Saudia Arabia, which acquired them after the Texas Zephyr was discontinued in 1967.

As built the configuration was 10 parlor seats in the forward section, a buffet in the middle with a pair of card playing tables on either side located at the windows next to the blank in the middle, and 31 seats in the observation section. The rear warning light was modified at some time; it was delivered with a single light in that location. Although most of the original DZ trainset was articulated, the observation was not. Before this car left the Budd plant, Edward G. Budd had his photo taken in the observation section with several of his associates.

C&S 652
Title:  C&S 652
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway 652, named SILVER ARROW, in Denver, Colorado on an unknown day in August 1969, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Ordered in December 1935 (Budd Job 965, Plan 9512), delivered as CB&Q number 412 in October 1936, this car was a 12-Section sleeping car (based on the existing Pullman design, and in service, these cars were managed by Pullman), semi-articulated (they shared the center truck) to number 440 (later C&S 680), named SILVER SIDES, a 3 compartment, 1 drawing room, 6 double bedroom sleeper, seen in the background. These two cars made up part of the first Denver Zephyr (DZ). The DZ was re-equipped in 1957, and the two consists of the first DZ were transferred to the C&S (this car was renumbered CS 652), becoming the Texas Zephyr, and running in that service until February 1965. Sometime in the 1970's between 18 and 24 ex-Zephyr cars were shipped to Saudi Arabia, this car set is believed to be among those cars. Also of interest is the coupler, which made all electrical and pneumatic connections automatically. You can see the limitations of that design. Note that Budd carried the fluting through the doors, a design not repeated.

C&S 900
Title:  C&S 900
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway 900 at Denver, Colorado on June 8, 1962, photographer unknown, duplicate slide by Al Chione, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is excerpted from the Burlington Route Historical Society publication Bulletin #17, OFFICE CARS, edited by Hol Wagner:

First 900 was destroyed in a wreck on the FW&D in 1928. With sale of 901 and the destruction of 900, the C&S found itself without a top-rate office car for its vice president and general manager. And as 1929 dawned, the road could ill afford to buy a new car from Pullman or AC&F. So the Q's Aurora shops came to the rescue, converting an old ( 1902 ) open platform parlor-lounge-observation car ( CB&Q 208, built as 301 and named IOWA ) into a new vice presidential car for Robert Rice. Completed in January 1930, the new car was assigned the number second 900 and remained through several upgradings as the principal C&S office car until 1967 when, with the discontinuance of passenger service on the C&S-FW&D, it was sold.

Title:  C&S E5 9950A
Description:  C&S E5 9950A, Denver, Colorado, August 26, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1940 (c/n 1035) on Order E278, retired March 15, 1968 and traded to EMD on an order for SD40's. This was the only E5A built for the C&S, the rest were acquired second hand from parent CB&Q. At the same time, the FW&D acquired its only E5A, 9980A. Both units were lettered for their Zephyr assignment, the Texas Zephyr. This is what became known as a "Phase I" E5, the major differences were in the roof grills, side cab vent, steam generator vents, front pilot/anti-climber/coupler arrangement, and the rear bulkhead ribs. It was named "Silver Racer", and the E5B (#9950B) delivered with it was named "Silver Steed".

C&S E5 9955
Title:  C&S E5 9955
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railroad E5 9955 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is daily unnamed Train 8-28, leaving Dallas at 9:20 PM, stopping at almost every station between Dallas and Denver, arriving at Colorado Springs at 4:20 PM the next day, finally arriving in Denver at 6:05 PM, almost 22 hours after starting out.

This locomotive was built as CB&Q 9914A and was involved in a collision with a crawler (IHC Model TD-18 TracTracTor weighing 23,945 pounds) that had just slipped off a flat car of a freight train passing in the opposite direction. The collision happened at Downers Grove, Illinois on April 3, 1947. The 9914A was the single locomotive powering Train No. 24 consisting of seven cars and was moving at approximately 70 mph at the point of collision. Upon impact the tractor was destroyed, the rear locomotive coupler was pulled out, the locomotive separated from its train and continued upright for 470 feet before hitting the Downers Grove passenger platform where it turned over on its right side, fatally injuring the Engineer. Meanwhile the passenger cars continued to roll and crashed into the station. Although the locomotive was extensively damaged, it was repaired and returned to service.

Title:  C&S E5 9955
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway E5 9955 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as CB&Q 9914A (c/n 1301) on EMD Order E377-A , named SILVER ARROW, it was sold to C&S September 20, 1961, traded to EMD March 15, 1968. It is seen here at the head of northbound unnamed Train #8, having left Houston, Texas the previous afternoon at 3:00 PM, due in Denver at 6:05 PM. After the C&S discontinued passenger service in 1967, the C&S E5's were pressed into freight service, but were ill suited for slow drag freights and burned up traction motors quickly. Note the retractable front coupler and buffer seen in the extended position. When retracted the coupler was covered with doors, since removed, and because it took 85 complete revolutions of the hand crank to fully extend or retract the coupler, in later years it was left in the extended position.

C&S E5 9955
Title:  C&S E5 9955
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway E5 9955 at Larkspur, Colorado on an unknown day in October 1967, Kodachrome by H. C. Crist, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as CB&Q 9914A (named Silver Arrow) in June 1941 (c/n 1301) on EMD Order E377, it was sold to the C&S September 20, 1961, becoming C&S 9955, and was traded in on an order of SD40's on March 15, 1968. It is seen here in freight service after the C&S and FW&D discontinued passenger service in 1967. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Burlington Bulletin 10, The E's, edited by Hol Wagner: In their final months of service on the C&S, the last of the E5's were used, rather unsuccessfully, in freight service over the Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo. This line includes a steep grade in both directions to the divide at Palmer Lake, and even though the former Q E5's had been geared down, the graceful units were still high speed passenger power. Running in five and six-unit sets, the now filthy stainless steel speedsters were forced to double the hill up to Palmer Lake with 30-35 cars at a time. And still they fell well below their continuous rated speed of 29 mph, so traction motors, and even main generators, were burned up at a frightening pace. This indignity lasted only a couple of months (September 21 to November 10, 1967), because it served to render nearly all of the units inoperable.
