Here is page two of a 22-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "A Pictorial Review Of Progress On The Pennsylvania." It was issued originally in March of 1953. Partial Caption: "New and repaired freight cars rolling to service." Pictured in the foreground is PRR engine #6816, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in June of 1959. Partially visible at the right is PRR engine #9576, a BF-15 constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963.

Here is page three of a 22-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "A Pictorial Review Of Progress On The Pennsylvania." It was issued originally in March of 1953. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "This is the New York-Washington-St. Louis 'St. Louisan' crossing the Little Juniata River in central Pennsylvania." Prominent here is PRR engine #5901, an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in September of 1945, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "This three-unit, 6,000 horsepower diesel-electric freight unit is shown pulling a fast, through train near Chicago." Prominent here is PRR engine #9465, an FF-20 built by Fairbanks-Morse in January of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1962.

Here is page four of a 22-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "A Pictorial Review Of Progress On The Pennsylvania." It was issued originally in March of 1953. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "Here is the new all-room 'Broadway Limited' crossing New Jersey on its way from New York and Philadelphia to Chicago, drawn by one of our one-hundred electric passenger locomotives." Prominent here is PRR engine #4902, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) built in Juniata during May of 1940 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "At right is a new electric freight locomotive employing the first successful application of the ignitron rectifier, an electronic principle using large mercury arc tubes to convert alternating current, more efficiently transmitted, to direct current, used more readily by traction motors." Prominent here is PRR engine #4996, an E-3B (B-B-B) built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in June of 1951, rated at 3,000 horsepower, and retired in June of 1965.

Here is page six of a 22-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "A Pictorial Review Of Progress On The Pennsylvania." It was issued originally in March of 1953. Complete Caption: "Work has begun on the new Samuel Rea freight car repair shop, the country's largest, at Hollidaysburg, Pa., near Altoona. The structure, depicted above, will be 2,460 feet long, 54 feet high, and vary in width from 180 to 270 feet. Named for the ninth president of the railroad, who was born in Hollidaysburg, the shop will turn out 50 repaired cars a day with new efficiency on three assembly lines when it is finished in 1954. It will cost $12,800,000. Cars entering the shop from main line service in the morning will be ready for road use the same day. New paint will be dried quickly under infra-red lamps."

Partial Caption: "On the Ohio River, 22 miles west of Pittsburgh, the new Conway Yard will triple the capacity of the present yard at the site, classifying up to 8,000 cars a day." [Note: This photo was actually taken at the Enola Yards. There's no overhead catenary or GG-1's at Conway.]

Partial Caption: "Culminating passenger terminal improvements in Philadelphia, old Broad Street Station, the roof of which is shown at bottom right, with train platforms beyond, was closed last spring. Train service was transferred to the great new Pennsylvania Station at 30th Street, shown in the distance, with improvements and expansions there costing $11,300,000." At the right is the PRR's Suburban Station building, now the home office for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
