Album Info:Just west of the Rock River in Janesville, the ex-C&NW trackage splits at a switch. Continuing across the river is the former line to Fond du Lac, now abandoned just beyond US Highway 14 where UP serves a handful of customers (a portion of that trackage is also utilized by WSOR to access their ex-Milwaukee Road line to Milton and Madison/Waukesha). Paralleling the west bank of the river before bending off to the west and then north is the former line to Madison and points north (RR west). UP owns this as far as MP 119 just east of the village of Brooklyn, but traffic is extremely rare west of the Landmark Co-op located just east of Evansville; where unit grain trains are loaded on a loop track. This album covers this segment of the line from the Janesville city limits westward.

Description:  The Evansville "branch" actually continues to Madison, although the part north and west of Evansville hasn't seen a train since 1997 and has several grade crossings removed or paved over. In C&NW days it was part of a mainline extending from Chicago through Harvard, IL and then through Janesville, Evansville, Madison and Reedsburg en route to the Twin Cities. Now UP and Wisconsin & Southern operate portions of the line in disjointed segments with greatly varying levels of train traffic and track condition.

Description:  UP had a large number of two-bay covered hoppers stored up to their end-of-track at MP 119 south (RR east) of Brooklyn, WI on the segment of the former C&NW Chicago-Twin Cities line between Janesville and Madison. The line is out-of-service west of there through Brooklyn, then operated by Wisconsin and Southern out of Madison. They pulled these in two sections in early May, 2021. This was the second such move, of 77 cars. Unfortunately, due to work I couldn't get them on the extremely rarely used mileage west of the Landmark Co-op through the city of Evansville, catching up just as the train was coming past Landmark.

Description:  On the west (head) end of GSKNEV-15 which arrived at South Janesville on the morning of Sunday the 17th was another KCS uniu in "Southern Belle" paint, and this one was unique! During the lockdown phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, 4009 received this special version of the scheme with a "Dual Flags" motif (similar to CP's with the US/Canada flags) and a dedication to KCS's "Resilient and Essential" employees. The other side has the "compass" below the cab numbers display "S" and the same dedication in Spanish. While the train was parked at the yard, 4009 was barely visible from public property and never well-sunlit, so myself and many other local railfans were gnashing their teeth hoping it would move (a) in daylight and (b) while we were free to go catch it. I lucked out, getting done at my afternoon dentist's appointment about half an hour before the heads up post that they were on the move (they didn't find any damage from the gnashing, btw).
