Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here are two PRR freight trains: one is eastbound (heading right), the other is westbound (heading left). The eastbound mixed-cargo freight is visible in the foreground. The westbound "Yankee Jet" ~ a merchandise express train from Boston to Chicago in 26 hours or less, powered by six GP-9 locomotives ~ is visible in the background. They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Visible on the left is Mr. Thomas Harry Lantz of Duncansville, Pennsylvania. He was 14 years old at the time! |

They are pulling a 50-car eastbound TrucTrain around the Horseshoe Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the head-end brakeman in the second unit! As of 04 July 2016, or 55 years later, #7128 ~ now numbered "7580" ~ is in active excursion service with Steam Into History at New Freedom, Pennsylvania. |
