HLCX 3855 |
Description: |
HLCX 3855 GP38-2 spends New Year's Day with another Helm Geep at Union Pacific's Browder Yard. Louisville & Nashville accepted this diesel from Electro Motive as LN 4090 GP38-2 in October 1972, becoming SBD 4090 in January 1983 after the creation of Seaboard System then renumbered SBD 2600 the following year. With the formation of CSX Transportation this diesel became CSXT 2600 in April 1986 zntil retired on April 1, 1993 and sold to Helm for lease service becoming HLLX 2600. Initially accepted on a short term lease, Southern Pacific changed the terms to a long term lease in August 1993 and shippcd this locomotive to Metro East Industries for rebuilding. But rather than emerging in a fresh coat of gray and red (like other units in this lease) it emerged in Helm blue and maroon with "SP" initials on the hood numbered SP 4864 GP38-2 on June 20, 1996. After the Union Pacific merger, this Geep was assigned UP 490 but was never renumbered and instead retired on October 13, 2003 and returned to lessor Helm becoming HLCX 3855 GP38-2 on June 20, 1996. |

Description: |
HLCX 1804 GP38-2 spends New Years Day in Union Pacific's Browder Yard with another member of the Helm fleet. Delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 861 GP38-2 in January 1972 but was soon renumbered MP 2012 just two years later. Another change occurred on December 10, 1986 when this Mopac diesel became UP 2338 then returned to its lessor on July 3, 1987. New owner Helm leased the unit back to Union Pacific and it was eventually repainted and renumbered becoming UP 1803 on May 12, 1989. On November 15, 2000 and a new number was applied becoming UP 303 then finally on October 23, 2014 leased power was moved off the UP roster and rejoined Helm as HLCX 1804. |

Description: |
LTEX 3000 GP40 enjoys New Year's weekend off at the Blacklands Railroad headquarters in Sulphur Springs. Delivered to Denver Rio Grande & Western as DRGW 3054 GP40 in January 1966, this unit was modified by Rio Grande as "trailing unit only" with the removal of cab seats, radios, and toilets in 1972 but had all cab appliances restored by 1988. At the time of the 1996 Union Pacific merger DRGW 3054 was still on the roster in active service and was to become UP 718 but was retired on December 26, 2001 before renumbering. Larry's Truck Electric picked up this unit and gave it a orange and green paint scheme (reminiscent of B&LE orange and black) and a new number, LTEX 3000. |

Carrying a build date of November 1993, Electro Motive delivered this diesel to Southern Pacific as SP 9776 until being repainted and renumbered UP 5875 on March 2, 1999. Almost three years to the day this GP60 would be renumbered again to UP 2075 on March 15, 2002. Union Pacific is renumbering the GP60 fleet to the UP 1000-1142 series and modifying control stands resulting in a redesignation to GP62 so expect to see a new number in the near future. |

Description: |
UPY 3008 S3-2B shows off a spotless coat of fresh paint while pushing a cut of cars at Davidson Yard. Electro Motive delivered this slug to Chicago & North Western as CNW 6657 SD38-2, part of a ten unit order arriving January 1975 for hump service at Proviso Yard in Chicago. After the UP-CNW merger this unit would have become UP 2813 but skipped this number series and instead became UPY 813 on April 7, 2001. Perhaps lack of dynamic brakes doomed this diesel, but on June 10, 2015 this unit emerged from the shop as UPY 3008 S3-2B paired to UP 3007 SD40N. Note this slug still retains two cooling fans at the rear similar to an SD38/SD38-2 but only has head and ditch lights on what is traditionally the front which suggests only one end of the slug can receive power from the mother unit. |

Now owned by Helm this switcher was leased it to ITS Technologies and Logistics as ITSX 3454. Initially this switcher was given ITSL reporting marks then later changed to ITSX as evidenced by the slanted 'X'. Note the oil stained hood, a sign of an ongoing mechanical issue with the prime mover. |
