CN 2223 - Tolono IL - 09/27/17
Title:  CN 2223 - Tolono IL - 09/27/17
Description:  The Illinois Central was known as "The Mainline of Mid-America," but now this trackage is a part of Canadian National. So ... Is the Canadian National now "The Mainline of Mid-America?" Rolling through Tolono, Illinois, is a northbound CN freight lead by ES44DC 2223, Dash 8-40CM 2447 and GP40-2L 9402. More colorful than ICs black scheme, but ICs old orange and white scheme was even more colorful.

CSXT 2733 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Title:  CSXT 2733 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Description:  CSX GP38-2 2733 was found in the Pioneer Railway's Harwood Yard (formerly known as Pigeon Creek Siding) on September 28, 2017. This engine was built in February 1973 as Penn Central 8091. When Conrail was formed three years later, it became CR 8091. When Conrail's assets were divvied up between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999, this locomotive became the property of CSX Transportation, and was renumbered to CSXT 2733. Just three owners in 44 years? Compared to some engines, that isn't bad. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

PREX 806 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Title:  PREX 806 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Description:  Indiana Southwestern (a part of Pioneer Railcorp) GP8 806 was found in Evansville, Indiana, on September 28, 2017, wearing a paint scheme reminiscent of the Nickel Plate Road's diesels. This engine was built as Illinois Central GP7 8969. When Illinois Central Gulf (the railroad's new name after the merger with the Gulf Mobile & Ohio) embarked on a rebuild program of their older GPs, this engine was rebuilt into "GP8" 7969. Eventually, older power, even if rebuilt, becomes a burden and the ICG sold this locomotive to the Iowa Interstate, as IAIS 469. IAIS was doing well and bought new power, so this engine was sold again, this time to IRECO, which numbered it IREX 806. Pioneer Railcorp purchased it, but retained the number (now PREX 806).

USN 65-00650
Title:  USN 65-00650
Description:  United States Navy 2GS14B 65-00650 (shortened to just "650") is one of three diesel locomotives that switches cars at the Crane Naval Support Center in Crane, Indiana. Just days prior to being photographed (with permission) on September 29, 2017, much of the lettering on the cab had been removed, as the rail operations at Crane would be transferred to the United States Army on October 2, 2017. With that change, these bright yellow locomotives will soon receive new red paint jobs, in order to conform to the rest of the US Army's railroad fleet.

In 1976, the engine entered the SP's rebuild program at the Sacramento Shops in California, emerging that December as SP GP9E (also often called GP9R) number 3843. After retirement, it passed through a couple of used locomotive dealers before ending up on the Hoosier Southern.

RRC 5838 - Boonville IN - 09/30/17
Title:  RRC 5838 - Boonville IN - 09/30/17
Description:  Respondek Railroad Corporation made a wise decision when they resurrected the bright green paint formerly used by Illinois Terminal Railroad, as it is bright enough to make their equipment visible (and not blend in with the safety yellow or orange on high-visibility vests worn by workers these days), and it very attractive color on top of that. Switching the Liberty Coal Mine in Boonville, IN, are a pair of Respondek's SD40-2s: RRC 5838 dressed in green (the former Canadian Pacific 5838, and later Indiana & Ohio Railroad 4084) and RRC 5690, wearing a red scheme and lettered for Squaw Creek Southern (also a former CP engine, later sold to St. Lawrence & Hudson, both of which also numbered it 5690). On this September 30, 2017, date, RRC 5690 was not yet fully painted. (Photographed on private property with permission and full PPE.)

Title:  CSXT 5414 - Evansville IN - 10/01/17
Description:  With the growing season over, the crops that are grown in the flood plain in southern Evansville, Indiana, have been plowed under in preparation for next summer's harvest. The CSX mainline is built upon a long stretch of trestles in order to keep the railroad running whenever the Ohio floods its banks - so there is a prototype for the Atlas trestle set! A southbound CSX intermodal train heads for the bridge across the Ohio River (and on into Kentucky) on October 1, 2017. BNSF 7241
Title:  BNSF 7241
Description:  BNSF Railway train Z-LACNYC9-11 passes through the busy intersection of Rosecrans and Marquardt in Santa Fe Springs, California. This eastbound train is a Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train, originating in Los Angeles CA and destined for New York NY. An impressive lash-up of locomotives is powering this train: BNSF ES44DC 7241, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4528, Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW 9702, BNSF ES44DC 7831 and BNSF ES44C4 6888. This grade crossing is one of the most dangerous in the United States because it bisects a busy highway intersection, with a fifth highway joining Rosecrans just beside the crossing - making it a five-way intersection with several trains per hour passing through.

UP 1943
Title:  UP 1943
Description:  Union Pacific SD70ACe 1943, the railroads newest specially-painted locomotive, hustles through Cabazon, California, just minutes after the sun dropped behind the San Jacinto Mountains on November 18, 2017. The train was delayed roughly a half-hour due to some cretins not only placing debris on the tracks near Indio, but they were also seen pointing a rifle at a passing freight - so all rail traffic was halted until the area was deemed safe again. This six-car passenger special originated in Council Bluffs IA and was heading to Oakland CA. UP 1943 is painted to commorate United States Armed Forces, with the first third honoring the Air Force, the middle third the Coast Guard and Navy, and the final third painted in camoflage for the Army and Marines.

UP 119
Title:  UP 119
Description:  A short Union Pacific special train winds through the desert at Cabazon, California, just after sunset (on the Sunset Route!) on November 18, 2017. Six passenger cars (Missouri River Eagle, Katy Flyer, Sunshine Special, Portland Rose, Columbine and Kenefick) are deadheading from Council Bluffs IA to Oakland CA for winter storage. The train, PCBOA3-16, is being pulled by a pair of SD70ACes - 1943 ("The Spirit of Union Pacific") and 9088. But in this view, observation car 99 "Kenefick" is the center of attention as the train passes one of hundreds of wind generators found on windy Beaumont Hill.

The engine was rebuilt to "Dash 2" standards at NS's Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA, in March 2006, and renumbered 5630. (March 11, 2018)

AMTK 705 - New York NY - 03/15/18
Title:  AMTK 705 - New York NY - 03/15/18
Description:  On a bright, sunny and cold March day on Manhattan island in New York, Amtrak "Empire Service" train 280 has just passed under the George Washington Bridge (one of many that connect New York to New Jersey, and the GWB is part of New Jersey governor Chris Christie's legacy) as it makes its way from Niagra Falls, New York, to Penn Station in New York City - just a few miles ahead. This is the Fort Washington section of New York City, and the train is still paralleling the Hudson River as it heads south (or east, according to the Amtrak timetable). A recent series of cold Nor'easter storms is keeping Spring at bay for now, but beneath the adjacent park's bare trees, tulip and daffodil shoots are poking through the soil, indicating that Spring is not too far off. Amtrak P32AC-DM 705, a dual mode (third rail electric and diesel-electric) locomotive, is pulling this train consisting of Amfleet cars. AMTK 705 is looking very ragged at this point, and will most likely be getting repainted soon into the new scheme being applied to the rest of the P32AC-DM locomotives - the new scheme is a throw-back to the carrier's "Phase III" stripe scheme, with the addition of a large, colorful Empire Service logo to the sides just behind the cab.
